- Chinchillas have teeth that are always growing, both the front teeth (incisors) and the back teeth (molars). If their teeth don’t wear down normally (either as a result of poor diet or unfortunate genetics) then he cannot eat.
- Chinchillas can live over 20 years! So be sure you’re ready for that commitment.
- Chinchillas need exercise. Be sure you have a chinchilla-appropriate wheel in the enclosure.
- Clumps of fur can fall out if your pet is not properly handled. Do not scruff or hold your pet chinchilla by the skin. This release of the fur, called “fur slip” is a defense mechanism allowing a chinchilla to escape when trapped and can leave a bald patch. The fur will grow back, but it’s best to avoid stressing a chinchilla enough to drop fur.
- Chinchillas require a special area for a “dust bath” to help keep their coat and skin healthy. Dust for chinchillas is sold in pet stores and available online.
- Most common medical problems of chinchillas include: dental disease, intestinal infections, and respiratory infections.
