6 Things Every Rabbit Owner Should Know

(Before you get a rabbit or after you already have one).

  1. Rabbits must have hay available at all times – Alfalfa hay for juveniles (up to 5-6 months) and a grass hay like timothy, oat grass hay or sweet meadow hay (over 5-6 months).

  2. Rabbits have teeth that are always growing, both the ones in front (incisors) and in the back (molars).  If those teeth don’t wear down properly (due to either poor diet (not getting hay) or unfortunate genetics), he or she might not be able to eat properly.

  3. Rabbit feet should not be on a wire floor, as this causes foot sores.

  4. Rabbits should avoid sugary foods and carbohydrates.  Fruits and carrots might be okay in very small amounts.

  5. Pet rabbits should live indoors.  Rabbits kept in hutches are at risk of a number of parasites (e.g., maggots, bot flies) and injury by predators.

  6. Common medical issues of rabbits include: dental disease, life-threatening stomach or intestinal issues, foot sores, bladder sludge or bladder stones, and injuries.
